Walking a combination of the Camino Portugués Coastal and Central routes is one of the best ways to experience the full diversity of northern Portugal and Galicia. This itinerary and map describes walking from Se Cathedral in Porto to Caminha in Portugal on the Coastal route. Walking with a connecting route to Tui in Spain and continuing to Santiago de Compostela on the Central route.
The Central Route and Coastal Route are both well-marked and easy to follow. Each path has its own charm and advantages: the Coastal Route offers stunning ocean views, fresh sea air, and charming fishing villages where you can enjoy seafood straight from the Atlantic. There are less pilgrims walking the Coastal Route. It’s a peaceful, scenic start with gentle walking stages and plenty of moments to soak up the maritime atmosphere.
The Central Route, on the other hand, takes you inland through historic towns, vineyards, and lush countryside, following the more traditional pilgrim path to Santiago. It’s richer in cultural heritage, with centuries-old churches, lively local markets, and authentic Portuguese and Galician hospitality. There are several points where pilgrims can switch between the two routes, allowing for a tailor-made journey. We recommend making the connection from Caminha (Portugal) to Tui (Spain) — a beautiful transition where you cross the Minho River and join the classic inland trail toward Santiago de Compostela.
