Looking to escape Mexico City’s lung-choking smog, snail-paced traffic jams, and invasion of American tourists?

I know just the place!

According to new data shared by Mexico News Daily, a nearby city is seeing a 25% spike in air travel, but that’s just the tip of the nonexistent iceberg, since there’s also more exciting news regarding how to get here.

As the allure of Tulum has subsided and more authentic destinations rise, Mexico’s trendiest getaways nowadays are where you least expect — the pristine shores of Ixtapa, surging neighbors of Cancun, and yes, even a vibrant, European-esque city with no beach in sight.

While Cancun, Los Cabos, and Mexico City still round out Mexico’s most popular vacation spots, underrated cities like Queretaro are rapidly making a name for themselves, becoming even more enticing with a new train project chugging along and shockingly cheap stays (without sacrificing luxury!).

Mexico: The World’s New Slow Travel Destination

Who would’ve thunk it? As the U.S. has teased us with new trains for years, never coming to fruition, Mexico has become the North American destination for seeing the world low and slow by rail.

While there were undoubtedly some hiccups with the highly anticipated Maya Train, that wasn’t Mexico’s first dab into train travel, as the Chepe Express has long been one of the country’s most underrated adventures.

Last year, more train routes were launched too, largely flying under the radar. Most notably, the thrilling Tequila Express, where you don’t have to worry about a designated driver or even the lesser-known Tren Interoceánico, venturing through what feels like uncharted territory with stops in unheard-of indigenous communities and secret beach towns.

The latest addition is an exciting Mexico City—Queretaro route. Shovels hit the dirt last month, and the completion date is 2027.

The full journey from Mexico City is expected to take just under 2 hours, topping out at 124 mph.

Until it’s ready to roll, as mentioned previously, air travel has been soaring to Queretaro. In fact, Americans can fly direct from 7 U.S. airports (8 if you count the San Diego/Tijuana loophole).

Queretaro Oozes European Vibes

Get here however you can. It’s one of Mexico’s unicorns. While I haven’t visited Queretaro just yet, from what I read (and from what we’ve covered previously, it offers similar vibes to one of my favorite Mexican getaways, Guanajuato — a slice of Europe within Mexico’s vast borders.

Many of Mexico’s historic cities, such as Oaxaca, Guadalajara, and Merida, offer next-level aesthetics, but few transport you to Europe without the drag of a long-haul flight ‘across the pond’.

Queretaro is UNESCO-listed and is most notably known for its timeless city center, which boasts staggering cathedrals and picturesque plazas that have stood the test of time through bygone eras.

Wander cobbled streets, enjoy velvety cappuccinos at sidewalk cafes, and marvel at various ornate structures at every turn.

Queretaro takes a lot of pride in its preservation. In fact, it’s widely considered the birthplace of Mexican Independence, leading the charge against Spanish rule in the 19th century.

Better yet, you should feel entirely comfortable exploring the city on foot to take in the sights. It’s considered one of Mexico’s safest cities.

Cheap Eats & Affordable Luxury

Chances are if you’ve made it this far, you’re a lover of Mexican food like me! While I’m fortunate to live near the border and indulge in some of Baja’s finest tacos, Queretaro offers a deeper dive into Mexico’s gastronomy rather than battered fish tacos and simple carne asada.

Not only will your tastebuds thank you, but so will your wallet. It’s entirely feasible to have a whole meal under $5 — and we’re not talking about bacon-wrapped hot dogs from a park vendor.

We’re talking Enchiladas Queretanas, Gorditas de Migajas, and hearty sopas packed with flavor — none of which you’ll regret trying in the least.

It’s easy to stay on budget with hotels, too, and you won’t have to downgrade to a podunk motel either.

My choice would be the historic 4-star Andy Hotel, going for an eye-popping $47 per night on Priceline this summer, but in the past we’ve also recommended leveling up to more modern digs at Queretaro Casa Inn, going for $82.

But for those who want to immerse themselves in Queretaro’s day-to-day lifestyle, they can also opt for a homier feel with local inns like Casa Frida B&B with rave reviews and $60 rates.
