I’ve been to Key West and let me tell you, it’s one of those places that gets under your skin in the best way.
Between the warm ocean breeze, the roosters strutting through the streets, and those mind-blowing sunsets at Mallory Square, my wife and I were both hooked from the first mojito.
And now? The airport just got a $130 million glow-up that makes getting there much smoother and fancier.
New Concourse A at EYW: Yes, It’s Fancy Now
So here’s the deal… Key West International Airport (EYW) just finished a HUGE $130 million renovation, and it’s kind of a big deal.
The brand-new Concourse A is open, and it’s got all the things you didn’t know you needed in a tiny island airport.
“The Key West International Airport Concourse A transformation into the 21st century is an amazing upgrade for arriving and departing passengers. The floor to ceiling glass on the concourse, the glass jetways, and the first-class amenities make Key West’s small airport a world class destination hub. We still have some finishing touches but all who pass through this facility will be in awe of the results achieved by the team that made this happen.”
-Monroe County Mayor Jim Scholl
Gone are the days of stepping off the plane into that sticky island air (charming, but let’s be real, it had its downsides). Now, you get glass jet bridges with sweet, sweet air conditioning .
Your hair and your outfit will thank you.
The new space is over 48,000 square feet, has eight gates, massive windows, and enough outlets for every phone, tablet, and travel gadget in your bag.
And because this is hurricane country, the whole thing is built 14.5 feet above ground.

The windows can handle winds up to 200 mph, and the glass even has special dots on it so birds don’t fly into it. I mean they really thought of everything…
As if that wasn’t enough, they also put in smart glass that adjusts tint depending on where the sun is. It’s like sunglasses for the building . Now I just want to figure out how to install the same tech in my windshield!
EYW is Getting Busier—and Better
With 1.5 million passengers flying in last year, EYW has become way more than a tiny island airport.
Now, you can fly nonstop to cities like New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Boston, and more. American, Delta, United, JetBlue, Allegiant, Silver, and newcomer Breeze Airways are all in the mix.
Check out flight options and airlines on Google Flights if you want to see what works for you.
And more upgrades are still coming.
Next up: a pedestrian bridge, expanded baggage claim, better security checkpoint, and even more traveler-friendly features. They’re aiming to wrap that up by summer 2026.
️ So You’ve Landed—Now What?
Honestly, landing in Key West feels like arriving on another planet in the best way.
It’s quirky, colorful, and packed with stuff to do, whether you’re a history buff, bar hopper, beach bum, or foodie. (10 points if you’re all four like me!)
️ Where to Stay
When I visited, I realized that where you stay can really shape your trip. Key West has a ton of personality, and the hotels reflect that. Some are cozy and quiet, others are lively and stylish. Here are a few I’ve either stayed at or have bookmarked for next time:
- The Capitana Key West– Beautiful and tucked away, but still close to the action. Perfect for couples and families. I stayed in one of the Cottages and it was like having my own house, highly recommend!
- Southernmost Beach Resort– Right on the beach with gorgeous ocean views, great pools, and an easy walk to everything. It’s perfect if you want that toes-in-the-sand vibe without being far from the action. (my wife and our Press Manager, Liz, is there right now and I am so jealous!)
- Kimpton Lighthouse Hotel – Super cute, super Key West. Bonus: it’s right near the Hemingway House.

What to Do
After you’ve settled in, it’s time to wander. I love how everything in Key West is walkable or just a short ride away.
Here’s what I’d hit first if I were back there now:
- Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square – Street performers, food carts, and epic sunset views. It’s touristy, but totally worth it.
- Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum – Even if you’re not a book nerd, the six-toed cats alone are worth the visit.
- Duval Street Crawl – From dive bars to fancy cocktails, this street has it all. Don’t skip Sloppy Joe’s.
- Rent a Bike or Scooter – The island is small, so skip the car and cruise like a local.
- Snorkeling or Sailing Trip – Book a half-day tour and hit the water. I loved our trip with Honest Eco. We spent the first half of our excursion Dolphin Watching (we had them come right up to the boat!), and the 2nd half snorkeling.

️ Food You’ll Dream About Later
Okay, food is a big deal for me when I travel. And in Key West? It does NOT disappoint. These spots stuck with me long after the trip was over:
- Blue Heaven – Go for brunch, stay for the key lime pie. There’s live music and chickens roaming the yard. Trust me, it feels like its own little world.
- Garbo’s Grill – It’s a food truck in a tropical yard and it’s wildly good. Try the Korean tacos.
- Latitudes – For a splurge night, take the ferry to Sunset Key. It’s dinner with a view you’ll never forget.
Why Now’s the Time to Go
Between the upgraded airport, more flight options, and all the classic Key West charm still intact, there’s never been a better moment to plan a trip.
Whether you’re escaping the cold or just need a reset that involves flip flops, conch fritters, and zero stress, this is your sign. In fact I’m tempted to go ahead and book my ticket now…
So grab a ticket, pack light, and get ready to fall in love with Key West all over again, starting the moment you step off that jet bridge.
