Simple Tips To Help Plan Your Travel Budget

Budget For Transportation Costs

This is something that many of us simply forget to budget for, or just decide to ignore completely. Depending where to and how much traveling you are doing, transportation costs can add up big time!

Whether it’s; bus transportation, car rental, taxi or any other mode of travel you may be taking, be sure to include this in your overall travel budget.

It’s always a good idea to check with your local travel agent or even on the internet, for transportation costs in and around your chosen destination.

In many cases and depending on your destination and how many people are in your group, taxis can often times be cheaper than bus transportation. We found this out a few seasons ago, on our holiday to Hawaii.

It was actually cheaper for our group to take a private taxi van, than that of the local shuttle bus based on a; per person cost.

This surprised me, but in the long run it ended up being much more convenient, faster and cheaper too!

Travel Budget Planning

Saving For A Trip Includes Your Accommodation

Establish A Food Budget When Creating Your Travel Budget

The next highest cost for travel is of course; 🥙 Food.

We all have to eat and depending on your budget, the options for food are unlimited.

There are numerous ways to save a great deal of money on food when traveling. One such option and one I always look for first, is selecting a hotel that offers {free breakfast included}, with the cost of your accommodation.

Yes, there are limitations depending on where you are staying, but we often are able to enjoy a healthy breakfast with beverages included. When you’re traveling with a group of 4 for example, this can save you a great deal of money!

Food is difficult to budget for, but depending on where you’re traveling to, one can usually stay within a daily set budget. Your highest expense for food will be eating out for every meal.

There are so many options to make your meals much more affordable, then dining in restaurants.

For example;

Hit the grocery stores or local markets and prepare you’re own meals.

Always try to have breakfast included in our chosen accommodation.

Check Google Reviews and/or Tripadvisor for recommended good cheap eats establishments.

My wife and I have enjoyed 2 budget trips to Australia over the years, making this expensive
country, very affordable to visit, while doing what I have recommended above.

Add Activities Into Your Travel Budget Plans

This pretty much includes everything else that you will have to dish out for on your travels.
For example;

  Tours & Attractions;

  Admission tickets;

  Sporting events;

  Rentals.

These are just a few of the endless extras that have to be accounted for on a holiday.

So think about what you may have to pay extra for and try to include this in your travel budget, within reason of course.

At least if you include this right away in your total expected expenses when saving for a trip, you will be somewhat prepared for the extras when you arrive, having already put money aside.

Plan For Shopping In Your Budget

In my list of travel budget tips here, be sure to set aside funds for shopping. This can definitely eat up all your cash very fast!

If you are watching your spending, then try to Set a Maximum Amount
that you will allow for shopping.

If using credit cards {not recommended}, you certainly don’t want to arrive home to all those extra expenses to deal with.

Most of us all like to buy souvenirs and clothing while away on vacation, so set a budget and try to stick to it. It may prevent you from buying something you really didn’t need in the first place!

Budget For The Unexpected

Last but definitely not least, is those unexpected expenses that may surface while you’re away.

I like to think of it as; Miscellaneous Expenses. Things always happen or appear unexpectedly when away from home. Whether it’s an unexpected emergency of some sort, or just something extra that surfaces when traveling.

Lost sunglasses, more suntan lotion, that souvenir you simply can’t do without and so on. I’m sure you get the message!

Credit Cards

credit cards

Within the last few years and like many other seasoned travelers, with ATM’s so readily available worldwide, we always try to use cash for just about everything.

It’s a lot cheaper than having to pay those extra international fees credit cards add. At the same time however, it’s always good to travel with at least one credit card, so you can take care of those extra sudden expenses and/or unexpected emergencies along the way.

There are credit cards available, that do not charge extra fees when using abroad, if that’s your preferred method of payment.

We always use credit cards that offer air miles and other travel related inclusions. We have cards that have; rental car collision coverage, medical, baggage loss, cancellation and more.

We’ve enjoyed a number of free flights over the years, by using travel related credit cards. They cost a little more, but if you travel frequently, they are definitely worth it!
