As Europe is Europe, it is home to iconic cities that you’ll find on every travel bucket list; the continent’s packed with them, from Paris to Rome. However, not every place resembles the glossy pictures in guidebooks and on social media. High prices, stifling crowds, or less-than-stellar entertainment can sometimes leave visitors feeling extremely dissatisfied. For as much charm and culture as they still have left to offer, many visitors will concede that they didn’t exactly live up to the hype. Here are nine European destinations that often fail to meet expectations.

1.  Paris, France

The City of Light is one of the most popular destinations in the world, but not everyone who visits falls in love with it. For many travelers, Paris can feel overcrowded, with lines snaking around major attractions like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. The cost of food and lodging is high, and some visitors describe the city as overly congested or a bit less romantic than expected. Although there is undeniable beauty in Paris, an overwhelming number of tourists can often leave travelers longing for a quieter and more authentic experience of France.

2. Venice, Italy

Venice appears dreamlike in photographs, but more than a few travelers have headed home from La Serenissima feeling curdled by crowds and prices. The canals are beautiful, they say, but too many of the streets are choked with souvenir shops and other tourist tchotchkes for them to see the real Venice. Food is expensive, and some complain that tourist menus are poor. The city still retains some unique charm, but visitors can easily feel rushed or overcharged, prompting them to opt instead for Italy’s charming towns, such as Verona or Bologna, for a more authentic experience.

3. Amsterdam, Netherlands

With its canals, bikes, and baroque nightlife, Amsterdam often seems to describe itself in someone else’s eyes. However, some travelers find it too commercialized, and bachelor parties and boisterous crowds overrun certain parts of the city. Accommodation is pricey, and cycling alongside local riders can be intimidating. Though the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are world-class, the ambiance in general can seem less relaxed than you might have hoped. Visitors may be quicker to explore smaller Dutch towns for a more tranquil and authentic setting.

4. Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is renowned for Gaudi’s architecture, its sunny beaches, and buzzing nightlife, but it is also one of Europe’s most densely populated cities. The narrow corridors of Las Ramblas and Sagrada Família are packed with tourists, and pickpocketing is a frequent gripe. Prices for food and accommodation have skyrocketed, and many locals resent the strained relations caused by over-tourism. Barcelona provides a lot for visitors to love, but tourists often find themselves just wishing they’d spent more time in the nearby coastal towns or quieter Spanish cities like Valencia.

5. Rome, Italy

Rome is a city rich in history, but not everyone is history-minded. The long lines at attractions such as the Colosseum or the Vatican can be energy-sapping, and the summer heat can contribute to fatigue. Some describe the city as chaotic -lots of traffic, pricey tourist-area meals, and crowds everywhere you look. Rome is enthralling with its ancient ruins, but many visitors find it overwhelming rather than charming. The smaller cities are often gentler and more enjoyable cultural experiences in Italy.

6. Prague, Czech Republic

Prague looks lovely with its Gothic buildings and medieval old town, but the reality doesn’t always live up to the hype. During high season, the Old Town gets so full of tourists that you can no longer appreciate the city’s beauty: bars and nightlife. Very energetic party crowds might overtake the charm of cultural shows. In tourist zones, food and accommodations have also become more expensive. Many visitors leave wishing that they had found a smaller Czech town where the authenticity is easier to come by.

7. Athens, Greece

A city with a rich ancient history, Athens feels chaotic and gritty to some travelers. The Acropolis is amazing, but long queues and sweltering summer days make it a grueling visit. Away from the historic squares, others say the city is loud, sometimes less polished than other European capitals. Although history buffs will not be able to miss Athens, many travelers prefer the islands or lesser-known destinations in Greece, where the ambiance feels more inviting and laid-back.

8. Brussels, Belgium

Brussels is a popular stopover for waffles, beer, and chocolate. However, many travelers will tell you that it lacks the charisma of other European cities. The Grand Place is, of course, arresting. The rest of the town feels businesslike and modern, but there are fewer historic attractions than you would think. Some think the prices are too high for what’s served. Brussels is fun for a day trip, but many travelers will tell you that they were underwhelmed by it compared with Belgium’s small, prettier towns.

9. Dubrovnik, Croatia

With old city walls and sweeping seaside views that appear plucked from a postcard, Dubrovnik is among the most picturesque places in Europe; so much so, though, that its fairytale looks can feel almost over-commercialized as well to travelers. Narrow streets teem with tourists from cruise ships, and prices run much higher than in other parts of Croatia. Though it is gorgeous, some say it seems more like a movie set than an actual living city. For many travelers, Croatia’s other towns, such as Split and Zadar, as well as the islands themselves, offer a more authentic blend of culture and coastal beauty.
